First mobile tower installed at K2 base camp

Mobile phones will now be able to be used on the world’s second-highest peak, K2, as the Special Communications Organization, a government agency providing telecommunications services in the border areas, has installed a mobile tower at the base’s base camp.
The initiative, taken with the cooperation of the Gilgit-Baltistan government and the SCO, aims to provide modern communication technology to peak tourists.
The installation of the mobile tower will not only make it easier for the climbers to interact with their team during the adventure, but will also provide timely assistance to the climbers in case of any emergency. In addition, the installation of the mobile tower has made it possible for climbers and tourists to connect with their families.
Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister Nasir Ali Khan told SAMAA Digital that once the tower becomes operational, adventure climbers will have access to the fastest internet and phone calls this summer.
Earlier, the K2 climbers used satellite phones to communicate, but in case of bad weather, they had difficulty communicating with the base camp.
