It’s not a hat, it’s an eco-friendly football stadium
Doha: What looks like a wide traditional hat in the hot desert is actually a football stadium built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be played in Qatar.

It is called Al-Thamama Stadium, located in the desert some distance from the Qatari capital Doha.

It was completed a few days ago and was designed by renowned Qatari architect Ibrahim Mohammed Jeddah.
According to Ibrahim Jedah, Al-Thamama Stadium’s unique design resembles a traditional Qatari hat, the Ghafia, which is beautiful as well as protects players and spectators from the scorching heat of the desert.

There will be eight FIFA World Cup 2022 matches, including a quarter-final.

The unusually wide roof of the stadium will protect a large part of it from the heat of the sun, while special arrangements have been made for cooling water fountains, fans and even air conditioners to keep the heat down.

Al-Thamama Stadium has a capacity of 40,000 spectators, but it is not only a stadium but also includes a number of mosques, boutiques, hotels and a large market.

Like most other Arab countries, Qatar is a hot desert country with an open ambient temperature of more than 50 degrees Celsius in summer days. That is why most of the electricity in these countries is spent on air conditioning systems.

Various measures have been taken at Al-Thamama Stadium to ensure that the internal temperature of the stadium is kept low with the use of less electricity.

To make it more ‘environmentally friendly’, a network of solar panels has been laid nearby which will meet the electricity requirement of the air conditioning systems installed here.
