Meditation also strengthens us against diseases, research says
Florida: American experts have discovered that meditation also strengthens our immune system, which is very helpful in protecting us from various diseases.
The study was conducted on 106 volunteers who had done ‘Samyama Meditation’.
Samyama meditation is completely silent for 8 days, meditation is done for ten hours daily, no meat of any kind is eaten at all, while the routine of sleeping and waking at the prescribed time is strictly followed.
For the research, blood samples were taken from all the volunteers before, during and after the Samyama meditation.
Analysis of the samples revealed that after meditation, the volunteers became more active with 220 genes that are directly related to the immune system. These included the 68 genes that specifically help us thwart any virus attack.
Significantly, despite the increased response of the immune system, none of these volunteers experienced any discomfort or illness.
In addition to these benefits, volunteers improved their ability to absorb oxygen during respiration, improved the health of cells at the individual level, and increased exposure to pathogens, which is a sign of good health.
The study was conducted jointly by various American institutions headed by Dr. Vijender Chandran of the University of Florida.
“So far we have only proved that meditation strengthens our body internally against diseases,” said Dr. Vijender.
He is now working on further research of this nature to bring to light the effects of ancient practices such as meditation and yoga in more detail, with solid scientific evidence.
